Cy Twombly, Dondi, Phase II, and Influences

This small drawing is called “Fireworks”. It’s part of an ongoing series I’ve been working on with this similar style. A friend called this style Cy Twombly-esque at our recent art show in Oakland, California.  I’m not entirely sure about the influence. I’m more in the camp of thinking graffiti and tagging as an influence before I would think of Mr. Twombly. It really does feel like catching a tag on the street when you make these. Of course the rush of trying not to get caught and the instant fame of the street are not there. But the pure aesthetic joy of getting loose through strokes of a pen are all there.
